Venus
The second planet from the Sun. It can approach Earth to within 24 million mi / 38 million km, closer than any other planet. Its mass is 0.82 that of Earth. The Latin goddess Venus and the Greek Aphrodite are usually known for beauty, love and grace. Yet ironically, the Goddess of Love was born of violence. In Greek mythology, Aphrodite was born when Chronos castrated his father, Uranus, whose genitals drifted over the water and the semen fell into
the ocean. After Saturn had sliced off Caelus' genitals, he promptly threw them into the sea. The story of Venus' birth, borrowed directly from the Greeks, explains that she arose from the foam of the sea shore. From the severed flesh mixed with the sea water to foment the growth of the child who would become Venus.
